Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition that occurs when the pelvic floor becomes weakened, enabling your uterus and other organs to drop or descend out of their normal positions. In addition to your uterus, pelvic organ prolapse can also affect your bladder, small intestine, vagina and rectum. Prolapse is said to have occurred when these structures descend into the vaginal canal or anus. Medically, these conditions are referred to as:
urethrocele (prolapse of the urethra)
cystocele (prolapse of the bladder)
enterocele (prolapse of the bowel)
rectocele (prolapse of the rectum)
vaginal vault prolapse
Prolapse occurs when increased pressure in the abdomen weakens the pelvic floor muscles or when injury or surgery affects the strength of the muscles. Some of the most common causes of pelvic organ prolapse include:
Some studies indicate having a family history of pelvic organ prolapse can also increase a woman's chances of developing the condition herself.
The symptoms of prolapse can vary based on the organ that's involved. Sometimes, prolapse causes no discernible symptoms; but when symptoms do occur, they can include:
a feeling of pressure of fullness in the pelvic area or vagina
aching in the lower back
pain during intercourse
urinary incontinence or frequent urge to urinate
constipation (when the rectum is involved)
vaginal spotting or bleeding
the sensation of something “falling out” of the vagina
Prolapse can sometimes be treated with lifestyle changes like losing weight or with pelvic floor exercises such as Kegels. In some cases, surgery may be needed to repair or remove the affected organ. Dr. Bruksch will discuss your options during your office visit.
