Menopause Q&A

What is menopause?

Menopause is defined as not having had a period for 12 consecutive months. The time leading up to menopause is actually called perimenopause, although many women refer to this period as menopause. Menopause occurs as a result of a decline in sex hormones that occurs as part f the natural aging process. Once you're in menopause, you can no longer become pregnant, and even during perimenopause, your chances of becoming pregnant or of having a normal pregnancy are decreased.

What are the symptoms of perimenopause?

Perimenopause can cause an array of symptoms, including:

  • night sweats

  • headaches

  • mood swings

  • problems sleeping

  • irritability

  • hot flashes

  • irregular or abnormal periods

  • vaginal dryness

  • problems concentrating

  • hair thinning

Some women experience the gamut of symptoms, while some experience very few noticeable symptoms at all. Likewise, some women simply stop having periods abruptly, while others may go through a period of very irregular periods before menstruation finally stops.

How is perimenopause treated?

While there is no single treatment for perimenopause, there are things you can do to reduce symptoms, such as using vaginal lubricants to reduce symptoms of vaginal dryness. Many women consider hormone replacement therapy to supplement natural hormone levels and help reduce many of the symptoms associated with menopause. Hormone replacement therapy does have some risks, so talk to Dr. Bruksch about the treatment to determine if it's the right choice for you.

What are the risks of hormone replacement therapy?

The most common side effects of hormone therapy or HRT include headaches, bloating and breast tenderness. Some studies have also indicated taking HRT for a prolonged period may increase the risks of developing heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. Dr. Bruksch can discuss the risks and benefits of HRT so you feel confident in your decision about whether to undergo therapy or not.
